September Foodie Pen Pals

A couple if months ago I signed up for Foodie Pen Pals. I get assigned a person to send not more than $15 worth of foodie goodies and someone else sends me a package. It’s like Christmas.

This month a really neat lady named Nae that runs www.ichoosethesun.com sent me a very tasty bunch of goodies.

I have to say that the pink salt and onion grinder is my favorite. And she didn’t know this but the sesame snacks have been a long time indulgence.

Foodie Things I’m Tired Of

Before anyone can start fussing that the gluten free thing doesn’t deserve to be in this collection let me say that indeed there is a population that truly medically need to avoid gluten foods. However how trendy is this new catch phrase?  Go down any grocery store aisle and I’ll bet that you can find at least a dozen items labeled gluten free in giant flashy letters.  So kudos to the food industry for acknowledging a need however most people do not need this type of product and I’m tired of seeing it everywhere.

Cupcakes.  Yah.  Don’t like cake and I really don’t understand the off kilter ratio of frosting to cake. 

Home donut machines?  Really?!  These just need to go away and leave donuts to the professionals (is there anything better than hot fresh glazed goodness straight off the belt?)

Macaroons?  Well fancy sandwich cookies are just pretentious. And pastel? No thanks… Easter eggs are the only pastel food that should be allowed.

A is for Apple, what’s your favorite variety? Pink Lady

B: is for Bread, regardless of nutrition, calories, or whole grains what is your favorite type to have a nice big piece of? Sister Schubert’s Parker House Rolls (frozen food section gold) 

C: is for Cereal what is your favorite kind currently? Crunchy Nuggets (I KNOW!) these are the store brand Grape Nuts 

D: is for Doughnuts, you might not currently be eating them but what kind do you fancy? Don’t really like doughnuts. 

E: is for Eggs, how would you like yours prepared? Farm fresh and poached 

F: is for Fat Free, what is your favorite fat free product? Skim Milk

P: is for protein, how do you get yours? Shakes and flesh (steak, pork, chicken, etc) 

Q: is for Quaker, how do you like your oats? Wendy’s Oatmeal bars are my favorite  

R: is for roasting, what is your favorite thing to roast? whole chicken 

S: is for sandwich, what’s your favorite kind? Hard for me to do but a bit of PBJ is heaven (crunchy and grape) and grilled is even better!! 

T: is for travel, how do you handle eating while traveling? Local places that I can’t find at home.

U: is for unique, what is one of your weirdest food combos? I’m from the french fry/frosty camp.  Don’t judge.  

V: is for vitamins, what kind do you take? Supposed to take a chewy multi, B complex, and calcium.  Yah, supposed to.  

W: is for wasabi, yay or nay? Yay in tiny bites.  

X: is for XRAY. if we xrayed your belly right now, what food would we see? 4 honey roasted peanuts and a latte.  

Y: is for youth, what food reminds you of your childhood?  Mom’s “nacho” dinner.  Awful but completely cravable now that I’m out of the nest.  Can of cheese soup heated, can of watered down refried beans, chips, cooked plain hamburger, salsa, and if we were good sour cream.  Love you mom!

Z: is for zucchini, how do you prepare it? grilled with mushrooms

Fancy or Comfy?

I’m missing something and I’m not sure what it is exactly.  I’ve got a few different friends talking about going on trips and all I can think of is my favorite part about traveling is finding the hole in the wall perfect comfy dinner places… or the jaw dropping fancy tastes of a cruise ship.  There’s only so much “fancy” one can afford on a tight budget people.  I miss hosting dinner parties.  Life’s busy that way.  I can barely find time to make dinner for Hubby and myself most nights (that’s presuming he’s not on a call and can actually get a hot meal when it’s still…HOT).

I’m a foodie in need of a fix I tell you.

I’m a Foodie

Yes, it’s true.  I’m a foodie.  I love all things food.  I love trying new foods and making new recipes.  Most of all I love kitchen gadgets.  Here are a few that are great.  Of course there are a few that I haven’t had the luxury to try yet (can you say Le Creuset?).

Le Cruset Oval Dutch Oven

At a lovely $269.95 each I don’t think I will get to try one of these gems any time soon.  Just about every cooking show uses these so I’m sure when I get my turn at owning one it will be heavenly.  I’m just sure of it.  If you’re not familiar with Le Creuset products they are non-reactive porcelain enameled cast iron cookware with tight-fitting lids that can just as easily be used on the stove as in the oven.  And they come in some very lovely colors.

KitchenAid Mixer

This amazing machine I actually do own.  It weighs in at a huge 22 pounds so once it made its way to my counter it has stayed there.  Although I could save a few dollars on the gym membership if I just started lifting my mixer.  I haven’t found anything that this baby can’t handle.  I only have a few of the attachments but let me tell you that the ice cream maker attachment is amazing!  At about $300 this is a serious investment and each of the attachments are around $50.  However those attachments can help save a ton of cash at home.  We all know that making your own bread saves money… now if you could make your own flour that would add up as well.  How about ground meats?  There’s an attachment for that as well.  Pasta roller, slicer/grater, or juicer even. 

Eggsact Egg Timer

There have been many times that I have found myself forgetting to set a timer for my husband’s all time favorite.  Hard boiled eggs.  It’s almost an unhealthy obsession of his.  This little gadget goes into the water with the eggs and as the eggs cook the color changes on this device to tell you how hard the eggs are cooked.  Perfect every time and for only about $5 how can you argue?  Of course I haven’t purchased one yet so dear hubby gets to eat sometimes forgotten hard (?) boiled eggs.

Thermometer

For something so simple this really is a huge necessity in every kitchen.  It means the difference between amazing turkey on Thanksgiving and sending people to the hospital with food poisoning.  Or the best way to get the perfect steak.  Want it cooked medium?  150 is the number to aim for there.  It’s just as easy to get perfectly rare beef as well if that’s more to you liking.  I’ve seen these for about $10 so a wise investment I say.
